"Primarily a painter, Deborah is experimental and is able to bridge many artistic mediums such as drawing, printmaking, photography and fiber into a cohesive, well woven message. The message is one that communicates beyond technique, and into the symbolism and emotion of family, human relationships and her keen observance of the world around her. Never insisting that her work command a certain meaning, she invites the viewer into a relationship with her art. At her showings, she is more curious and interested in her viewer's reactions to her art than she is concerned about her own self-image as an artist.
Sometimes Deborah works in a painterly and simple monochromatic palette that at first glance seems simple and contained. On second glance her work is explicably bursting with life and vibrating with simmering emotion. Her living imagery appears to be fluttering in a luminous ground that at once is still and in motion. Her contrasting and bold, brightly colored work evokes this same feeling of movement.
Deborah's other passion is working with children and has taught art techniques to young children in the public schools for 13 years and has recently volunteered with the Gallery in the Schools Program through the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. She has also created a beautiful collaborative outdoor tile mosaic with a Burnaby school. Deborah lives in Victoria, BC.
